What stays private
Everything we discuss in sessions is confidential.
This includes:
- What you tell me in person, over video, or in messages
- The fact that you're seeing me for therapy
- Any notes I take about our work together
- Payment information and scheduling details
I don't talk about you with anyone unless you give me written permission to do so.
The rare exceptions
There are only a few situations where I might need to break confidentiality.
If you're in immediate danger:
- You're planning to hurt yourself or someone else
- Someone is abusing or neglecting a child, elderly person, or dependent adult
- A court orders me to release information (I'll fight this when possible)
I'll always talk with you first about these concerns and explain what I need to do.
Your rights with your information
You control your records:
- You can request copies of your file
- You can ask me to correct errors
- You can request that I limit how your information is used
- You can ask who has accessed your information
Technology and privacy:
- Email and text aren't completely secure—we'll discuss what's safe to communicate this way
- Video sessions use HIPAA-compliant platforms
- Electronic records are encrypted and stored securely
- I don't use your information for marketing or share it with third parties
Questions about privacy?
This is important stuff, and you should understand it completely.
Ask me anything about confidentiality. It's your right to know how your information is protected.
